History of the Department
The Department of Chemical Pathology of the Ekiti State University was created in the year 2012 when the first lecturer, Dr Atiba Adeniran Samuel was employed. The Department gained more strength with the employment of Prof OA Afonja, an experienced Professor of Chemical Pathology, in December, 2012. He, however, left in 2017 after at the end of his contract.
A Chief Medical Lab Technologist, Mr AO Oladeji, was also employed. In early part of 2017, and two Adjunct lecturers (Prof. Oparinde DP and Dr Jimoh AK) also joined the workforce.
The Department currently has two full time academic staff, Dr. A. A. Idowu and Dr. A. S. Atiba, in the Senior Lecturer cadre, two Adjunct Lecturers (A Professor and a Senior Lecturer) with two technologists Mrs Awolope O and Mr Olawuyi
The Department has been led by seasoned Heads of Department at various time, giving it a solid foundation: Prof O. A. Afonja (2012-2017, Dr A. S. Atiba (2017-2019) and Dr A. A. Idowu (2019 till date)
VISION
Our vision is to adequately train students, the subject of Chemical Pathology both at undergraduate (MB;BS) and postgraduate levels. The Department will also thoroughly be involved in the design and execution of biochemical researches and students will also be trained along this line.
MISSION
We are to make the Department of Chemical Pathology of the Ekiti State University a unique one in the areas of training and research.
PHILOSOPHY
The Department of Chemical Pathology deals with the explanation of biochemical basis of disease and the analysis of body fluids to diagnose various disease conditions. Training of medical students along this line produces well equipped medical doctors
OBJECTIVES
- To adequately train students the biochemical basis of disease at both undergraduate (MB;BS) and postgraduate levels
- To adequately train students to be able to perform biochemical laboratory analysis of body fluids to make diagnosis
- To adequately train students in the area of interpreting the biochemical laboratory results to make appropriate report in order to advice clinicians in the management of patients
- To conduct research in the etiology, pathogenesis, management and prevention of diseases
- To establish central research laboratory that can help researchers in Ekiti State and in the entire country in the analysis biochemical parameters
